Kiss Me if You Can Novel Completed - Chapter 42
He ate candy every day, so he was already sick of sweets. He couldn’t help but eat candy, but he didn’t feel like eating anything else. Seth immediately seemed to understand, put down the chocolate, and pushed a candy towards him instead.
“You prefer this one, don’t you?”
Josh thanked him for his subtle consideration and picked up the remaining candy on the table, putting it in his pocket. Seeing this, Henry clicked his tongue, “Tsk,” and then grabbed a handful of chocolates.
“I’ll eat them instead.”
Soon after, everyone said nothing as he defiantly unwrapped and shoveled them into his mouth at a terrifying speed.
Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.
Regular footsteps mingled chaotically. Isaac, walking at the very back, following Steward and Chase, felt a chill in a corner of his heart for some reason.
The inside of the building was too quiet. As if only the three of them were inside.
Are there no other patients or doctors?
As he looked around, feeling an uneasy sensation, Steward happened to stop in front of a door.
“Then, until the examination is over.”
Smiling brightly, he opened the door and let Chase in first. Isaac was forced to remain outside the door. Steward, who had entered the room after Chase, turned around. Through the closing door, he smiled, as if to say, “Don’t worry.”
And the door closed.
“Alright, shall we begin?”
Steward spoke to Chase, who was standing in the middle of the consultation room. Glancing back, Steward readily stepped forward and said,
“You roughly know what we’re going to do now, right? You’ve always done it.”
“…I know.”
Chase replied briefly and, without another word, began to roll up one sleeve. Steward strode over and opened the medicine cabinet. After taking out the necessary instruments for the sample, he turned around and asked, preparing for blood collection,
“Grayson said Bliss went to England, didn’t he?”
Chase frowned for a moment but silently extended his arm, as if telling him to shut up and do his job. Steward, who had tied a tourniquet around his arm, spoke again as he prepared to prick the inside of his elbow.
“He probably had no choice but to protect his beloved youngest son, since it would be a big problem if the brothers raped him.”
And he added, as if to himself,
“It’s pitiful to suffer unnecessary hardships just because he was born an extreme omega among extreme alphas.”
At his words, Chase, who had clenched the hand he offered to Steward, gritted his teeth and spat out,
“Don’t say things you don’t mean. You wish for it inside, don’t you? To you, that child is just an experiment. Do you think I don’t know? You’d die of happiness if one of us raped him, wouldn’t you?”
When Steward looked up at the sharp tone, he immediately met Chase’s terrifying eyes. Steward was silent for a moment, then smiled brightly and lowered his gaze again.
“You could think that, but.”
He narrowed his eyes, checked the spot he was about to prick, and opened his mouth.
“My desire to help is sincere. Both you and Bliss.”
The thick needle lowered its angle and pierced his skin. Steward whispered to Chase, who instantly frowned.
“You come to me with such thoughts because you, too, have no other choice, I suppose.”
Chase bit his lip without a word. The needle, which had lingered unusually long, digging around under his skin, finally settled, and red blood gushed out.
“It’s done.”
Steward, who had easily loosened the tourniquet band, smiled. He put a small bandage on the spot where the needle had been inserted, then sorted and marked the samples before returning to his seat.
“Chase dislikes birds, doesn’t he?”
Steward smiled, looking at his furrowed face.
“Grayson told me. He dislikes dogs and birds. Does he dislike all animals?”
“…Do I have to answer?”
“No, it was just curiosity.”
Steward smiled brightly and then immediately changed the subject.
“So, did you experience any memory loss after that?”
Chase swallowed the medicine and water he was given at once, then shook his head. “I see,” Steward said, sitting opposite him.
“That’s fortunate. I’ll prescribe a temporary medicine until the test results come out. You’ll be more dazed than usual today, as your body won’t be used to the new medicine, so you’ll need about a day to adjust. You won’t have memory impairment, but your consciousness might be hazy, so please be careful about that too.”
He added meaningfully,
“It would be problematic if another accident like last time happens.”
Chase still said nothing. But Steward didn’t miss his unusually pale complexion.
“Alright, then.”
Steward smiled brightly and opened his mouth.
“Shall we begin the consultation?”
Click.
Isaac turned around at the sound of the door opening. Chase appeared first, followed by Steward, who closed the door behind him. The interior, glimpsed briefly, had much more furniture than the examination room earlier. Of course, the door closed before he could properly see it.
“I heard the bodyguards have changed, are the bodyguards here today all the ones you have?”
“Yes.”
When Isaac replied briefly, Steward continued, as if curious.
“It wouldn’t have been easy to find a gamma… Or an alpha? Beta?”
Isaac readily answered the question about the composition of the members.
“There are alphas and betas…”
“Gammas or omegas?”
“None.”
Steward smiled at Isaac, who again answered briefly.
“You must be going through a lot of trouble too.”
He suddenly wondered what kind of trouble he was referring to. But he also felt somewhat disinclined to ask. Most of all, he was bothered by the fact that Chase wasn’t saying a word. Normally, he would be shouting or at least getting annoyed, saying things like “It’s noisy” or something, but he was just walking with his mouth shut.
“It’s because of the medicine.”
Steward said, as if sensing Isaac’s thoughts.
“He’s on a different medicine, and he won’t be in good condition for about a day. He’ll be dazed and slow to react, like he’s sleepy… But perhaps that’s a good thing, he won’t be able to hit or cause trouble for others. Oh, there’s no memory impairment. If he experiences something terrible, he won’t be able to move his body, but the terrifying memory will remain as it is.”
“Is that true?”
Isaac asked in surprise. Consciousness remaining but unable to move his body, it was terrifying enough just to imagine. Steward whispered softly to Isaac, who was half in doubt, as if giving him an important tip.
“He said it feels like having a nightmare with his eyes open.”
Steward smiled brightly, seeing Isaac’s hardened face.
“The brains of extreme alphas are truly interesting.”
Isaac had no idea how he should react. Why is he telling me such things? Leaving Isaac, who couldn’t find anything to say, behind him, Steward opened the lounge door.
“Thank you for waiting, I’d like to introduce the newly reborn Mr. Chase Miller.”
Everyone looked puzzled and stood up from their chairs. Steward smiled and continued.
“Just kidding, we changed his prescription, and he’ll be a bit unwell today…”
He smoothly repeated the precautions he had told Isaac. Isaac felt an uneasy feeling looking at Steward, but he didn’t have anything particular to say. As they left the building, Steward asked,
“How long did it take you to get here? Did you take Route 24?”
Mark nodded.
“Yes, it took about three hours.”
“I see. I heard a lot of coyotes appear along that road, so you should be careful.”
“Ah… Yes, their numbers have generally increased recently. They’re said to attack people too. …Well, nothing much will happen, I suppose.”
“Right.”
Steward smiled.
“What could possibly happen?”
And one by one, they got into the cars. Steward stood there watching and then spoke.
“Alright, then. Have a comfortable journey.”
“Thank you for your hard work, Steward. We’ll contact you again.”
He smiled and lightly shook hands with Laura. On the way back, Josh, Mark, and Seth rode in one car, and Laura decided to ride in the car behind, driven by Henry, with Isaac. As Josh was about to close the driver’s side window, seeing Laura heading to the back car, Steward suddenly whistled.
♬♪…
At the short whistle imitating a bird’s call, Chase, who had been unresponsive until then, flinched. Josh, who saw him in the rearview mirror, reflexively looked up, but it was impossible to see Steward’s face standing outside the car window.
The car window closed completely, and the car departed.
The wide-open road was almost devoid of passing vehicles. All that was there was a single truck casually parked on the shoulder. Josh enjoyed the speed, driving at full throttle. One of the good things about being a bodyguard was being able to drive expensive cars as he pleased.
