Kiss Me if You Can Novel Completed - Chapter 100
At his quiet voice, Josh and Steward’s gazes simultaneously turned to him. Chase’s expression was devoid of emotion, making it impossible to discern his thoughts. Steward, with his gaze fixed on Chase’s face, replied.
“That’s right. As originally planned, we need to gradually reduce the medication while observing his condition. If side effects occur in the middle, we’ll have to come up with countermeasures. It means we need to be flexible and adapt as we go. He might be fine right now, but we can’t guarantee he’ll remain so in the future.”
“Mr. Miller stopped taking his medicine.”
Steward’s expression didn’t change much at Josh’s words. “It’s just been good luck that no abnormalities have appeared on the surface until now.”
Just then, there was a knock, and a staff member entered, handing Steward some documents. Steward greeted them briefly and looked at the documents. During the short time between the staff member leaving and him speaking again, Josh’s mind was complicated with countless thoughts and emotions.
After examining the test results for a while, Steward finally looked up. A smile had returned to his face, but Josh felt it was artificial.
“The results aren’t bad.”
Steward began, still with a smiling face. Thinking that his smiling face was like a mask, Josh waited for what came next. Steward continued, his gaze fixed on Chase.
“You could say it’s better than expected; it’s actually improved compared to last time. Well, now comes the moment of choice. Whether to continue taking the medicine and then stop, or just stop it and observe the progress. Of course, I would recommend the former, as I’ve said, but I can’t force it. The patient’s choice comes first.”
“I’m not a patient.”
Chase pointed out, and Steward asked with a smile, “Then shall we say, client?”
It wasn’t exactly wrong, but it wasn’t entirely right either. With silence between them, Josh spoke.
“It seems your opinion remains unchanged about taking the medicine again and observing the progress.”
“Because there has never been an extreme Alpha who took so much medicine at once for so long.”
He smiled, pulling the corners of his mouth up further. This time, it seemed somehow genuine, which made Josh feel a chill.
“Actually, I’m really curious to see how Chase’s body would change if he stopped the medicine immediately. But as his primary doctor, I shouldn’t say that.”
“…”
Steward closed his mouth as if asking what Chase would do, but only silence followed.
Click.
Laura, who had turned her head at the sound of someone, was startled to see the person who had closed the door and come out.
“Mr. Steward, what about Mr. Miller? Was the consultation successful?”
“Yes, Laura. He decided to continue taking the medicine.”
At Steward’s reply, Laura tilted her head, looking at the door he had closed. “What about Mr. Miller? Is there still something left to examine?”
To a puzzled Laura, Steward replied smoothly as usual. “He said he had something to discuss privately with the security guard, so I made arrangements for them.”
“Ah… Is that so?”
Laura soon seemed to accept it, taking her eyes off the door. Steward naturally continued. “The amount of medicine will be gradually reduced, but please be careful not to skip it from now on. The period he skipped the medicine wasn’t short, so side effects might appear later. If his condition isn’t good or if any problems arise, please contact me immediately.”
At his cautionary words, Laura nodded, her face tense. Steward continued with formal words, adding warnings, then subtly changed the subject and asked, “By the way, what happened to that security guard? I heard he was temporary, but it seems Chase trusts him quite a bit since he’s still working?”
“Ah, yes.”
Laura replied without much thought. “He was attacked last time, and there are still some security guards who haven’t returned… Since we already made a contract, we extended it until the filming ended.”
“The entire team?”
“Yes.”
As Laura readily nodded, Steward blinked, as if surprised. “Everything for one person, the Miller family certainly spends a lot.”
“Excuse me? What do you mean?”
To a puzzled Laura, Steward smiled faintly. “Just talking to myself.”
Silence still lingered in the consultation room. Even after they were left alone, Chase didn’t speak. Josh was the same. It was Josh who had asked Steward to leave, but it wasn’t easy to speak first. However, if not now, it would be difficult to find another opportunity. Josh sighed and, steeling himself, opened his mouth.
“Chase.”
“I’m sorry.”
Chase suddenly apologized. Josh, who was about to place a hand on his shoulder, paused, and Chase continued, looking down at his hands clasped on his lap. “I was impatient. I won’t skip it from now on.”
“…Okay.”
Josh, who had intended to persuade him when they were alone, found himself speechless. He awkwardly brought his hand to the back of his neck, rubbing it, and said, “He said to observe for about three months, so you’ll be fine soon.”
Chase paused, then nodded briefly. Josh, looking down at him, asked, “Did you want to stop the medicine quickly?”
“…”
“Why?”
At the quiet question, Chase remained silent. Is it just his usual capriciousness? Josh thought. This time nothing happened, but considering how he had left the security detail without permission last time, he decided he needed to warn him again.
“…Just.”
After a long while, he mumbled, “I thought I didn’t want to die like this.”
“…So that’s why we said to gradually reduce it and stop, right?”
Josh asked, puzzled, but Chase closed his mouth. Josh waited patiently for him to speak again. However, Chase, who had remained motionless for a while, suddenly stood up abruptly and looked at him as if nothing had happened.
“The medicine should be ready by now, right? Let’s go.”
To a momentarily startled Josh, he promised, “I won’t skip my medicine arbitrarily anymore.”
Chase even gave him a light kiss, smiling as if to reassure him. Watching Chase walk ahead, Josh couldn’t say anything more and just followed. Suddenly, Dane’s words, which he had forgotten, came to mind.
<“People always deceive others, Josh.”>
Josh slightly furrowed his brows, looking at Chase’s back. Surely Chase isn’t… deceiving me?
Why, what for?
He pondered, but there was nothing he could know unless Chase told him himself. In the end, several days passed with his curiosity unresolved, and Josh also became buried in his busy daily life and forgot about it.
