Desire Me If You Can Novel - Chapter 11
However, the fire chief had no choice but to pretend ignorance. He had been promised a colossal donation on the condition that he tolerate this nuisance of a young master for just one year. He was told he could demand whatever he wanted, such as the latest fire trucks he had been coveting for a while, or new firefighting equipment. So, who dared to refuse such a sweet temptation?
His subordinates were the same. Right now, they might be angry that someone was parachuting effortlessly into a position they had struggled to earn, but once they received the benefits a year later, they would all calm down and understand the chief’s decision.
But to shell out such a huge sum just for his son’s pastime… Miller was truly an incomprehensible man. Of course, it was possible because he had the wealth to back it up. For a petty citizen like himself, doing something like this was beyond imagination.
Even Ashley Miller, rumored to have neither blood nor tears, seems to cherish his own child.
Though the chief had scolded his staff, he too felt a twisting, unpleasant sensation in his gut the more he thought about it. But again, there was no choice but to endure. The idea that they only had to hold out for a year applied to him as well.
Ahem. Clearing his throat, the fire chief conspicuously shuffled the papers in front of him and spoke.
“I heard the details from Senator Miller. Still, we have to go through the basic procedures, so I’m going to ask you a few questions. Is that alright?”
“Yes, by all means.”
This, too, was something discussed beforehand. Of course, it was merely a formality, but he couldn’t skip it entirely. After all, he couldn’t have people claiming later that it was illegal or anything of the sort.
Clearing his throat with another ahem, the fire chief looked up at the man.
“Introduce yourself. Tell me what kind of person you are.”
“My name is Grayson Miller.”
Starting with his simple name, he continued speaking without hesitation. While listening to the man, the fire chief’s expression remained unchanged. The questions were the usual, cliched, and obvious ones commonly asked of aspiring firefighters. Since the result was predetermined regardless of the answers, the chief listened with glazed eyes, letting the words flow in one ear and out the other.
…Huh?
However, as he listened silently to the smoothly flowing voice, he gradually realized that something was wrong. The chief inadvertently adjusted his posture and gathered his wits to ask the next question, but the situation didn’t change. Instead, a sense of eeriness crept in.
The content of his speech, his tone, his gestures, and even the way he directed his gaze.
Watching all of Miller’s mannerisms, goosebumps rose on his skin.
<Dominant Alphas are all psychopaths.>
And a fact he had once heard in passing suddenly revived in his mind.
Humans who were beautiful enough to bewitch everyone, but whose brains were broken to the same extent. Someone who had revealed an extreme loathing for Dominant Alphas had said so, claiming that every single one of them was abnormal. Saying that no one could understand them unless they were a Dominant Alpha themselves.
The moment that story overlapped with the man before his eyes, a chill ran through the chief’s entire body.
Several men looking up at the cloudless, deep blue sky soon turned to each other, exchanging implicit glances. Having already heard that Grayson Miller was heading to the fire chief’s office, the time for confrontation would come soon.
“Is everyone ready?”
When one asked, the other men nodded in turn.
“How long has that bastard been in the chief’s room?”
“It’s about time he came out. He’ll appear here soon.”
“We have to fix his bad habits right from the start. We need to make him realize that being a firefighter is absolutely not an easy job.”
“Let’s make him piss his pants right there.”
“It’ll be quite a sight to see him running away with his pants soaked.”
“Help me! Help me!”
When someone shouted mockingly, a burst of laughter erupted. They were men sick and tired of muscle training and heavy lifting every day. One ordinary civilian man wouldn’t even be a mouthful for them. On top of that, Valentina had come out and was watching. Now was the perfect timing to show off their manliness to Valentina. Come on! You novice young master!
They puffed up their muscles and stood glaring in the direction they expected Miller to come from. The time spent lingering in tense silence wasn’t long.
“…He’s coming.”
Hearing approaching footsteps, someone muttered. Gulp. The sound of dry swallowing followed. In the eyes of a man who ostentatiously clenched his fist and adjusted his stance, the figure of someone turning the corner came into view, and subsequently, everyone’s gaze focused on him. As expected, the first person to appear was the chief. Their eyes quickly moved on to the figure appearing next.
Let’s see that pretty face of yours. You’ll be wetting yourself like a brat soon enough.
Amidst the murderous gazes, the man finally revealed himself.
Something seems wrong with the perspective.
That was the first thought that commonly popped into their heads. It was a well-known fact that Ashley Miller, the head of the Miller family, was tall beyond imagination. Therefore, they had vaguely expected his son, this man, to be quite tall as well. Some of them had seen his photos or videos through the media, so they were prepared to some extent.
But there was an enormous difference between imagining it and seeing it in reality. Seeing a massive man who seemed to be three heads taller than the average person walking toward them, they turned pale and simply lost their wits.
It wasn’t just his height that made them doubt their own eyes. His brilliant golden hair shone dazzlingly in the sunlight, and his deep violet eyes, a color they had never seen before, added a mystery to his existence.
Furthermore, with his long, slanted eyes, a sleek nose bridge that looked as if it had never been broken once, a refreshingly large mouth, and wide, thick lips—he was perfect. What about his firm, muscular chest revealed between the buttons of his shirt left undone, and his long limbs befitting his great height? Even his fingers were beautiful; he looked as if he had just stepped out of a fashion pictorial.
And an unbelievably sweet scent emanated from this man. At the scent so good it felt like they would fall deeply into it, their minds became even more dazed.
This isn’t the place for this man.
The thought occurred to them vaguely. He had definitely come to the wrong place. Or perhaps he was here to film a promotional video for the fire station. Right, that must be it. Everyone was thinking the same thing in their heads. This man can’t be that rake we were waiting for.
As they stood blankly staring at the man who had stopped a few steps away, the sound of a throat clearing—ahem—roused their attention. To the crew, who still couldn’t take their eyes off the man, the fire chief spoke.
“This is Grayson Miller. As you already know, he will be with us for the next year. I hope everyone welcomes him. It’s a short time, so I trust you will all treat him well.”
Implied in these words was the meaning, ‘Let’s just endure for one year.’ Of course, they all understood, and although there was a slight time lag, they eventually realized the reality before their eyes. That the target they had been so eager to confront was this very man right in front of them.
“This bastard is Miller?”
One man asked, frowning deeply. His gaze was still fixed on Grayson with a rebellious expression, but a hint of disbelief could be detected in his tone.
“Yes.”
The chief answered reluctantly.
“I told you the general details before, so let’s just briefly introduce ourselves and move on for today. We decided to start teaching him about the work tomorrow, so don’t overdo it.”
It was a subtle warning not to cause trouble, but it was uncertain how far his subordinates would follow it. The chief cast an untrusting glance at Grayson and added.
“We’re holding a welcome party at the bar later this evening, so make sure everyone attends without fail. You can greet the guys not present here slowly at that time.”
He spoke as thoughtfully as possible, but Grayson Miller seemed rudely uninterested. Seeing him look around the interior of the fire station with a clear view thanks to his towering height, the fire chief sighed and left the spot.
Anyway, they’re adults, they’ll figure it out. I’ve done what I can. There’s no need for me to warn them about that man.
